A new method, C-history based sink effect method, of determining the key parameters (partition coefficient, K, and diffusion coefficient, D) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission from dry building materials is developed. Different from the conventional methods, the method applies an air-tight chamber and is based upon our improved VOC emission model which considers the arbitrary initial VOC concentration distribution. It is of the following salient features: the test rig is simple, the temperature of the chamber air can easily be controlled and the measurement period is shorter. In order to improve the measurement precision, some pre-treatment for the samples tested (e.g., sealing the sample in an air-tight bag for a period) should be taken. The method is helpful for study the characteristics of VOC emissions from building materials.
