Research on Formaldehyde Pollution in Indoor Air

Formaldehyde emission has been recognized as a major concern in the indoor environment due to its health effects. In this paper, formaldehyde concentration has been determined in several office buildings and residential houses during 2001 to 2003 in Beijing. The result indicates formaldehyde concentration in most newly refurbished office buildings and residential houses exceeded permissible value of national standard, with the highest being 3.9 to 5.8 times as high as the threshold. It can be seen from the research that formaldehyde pollution in indoor air has relationship with density of new furniture and other factors, such as refurbishment regions, building materials, etc. Therefore minimization and elimination of indoor air pollution can be achieved by control of the above factors.
