A Pilot Study on VOCs and Carbonyl Compounds in Chinese Residences

Few studies about VOCs and carbonyl compounds related to personal exposure and health risk assessment in China were performed. In this study, personal exposure samplers of VOCs and carbonyl compounds were collected from 95 Chinese in 8 cities (30 from Chengdu, 5from Beijing, 10 each from Shanghai, Chongqing, Harbin, Urumchi, Kunming and Changsha). A passive sampling method was applied in this study for collecting personal exposure, indoor and outdoor samplers. Personal exposure concentrations were analyzed by GC/MS and HPLC, 12 VOCs and 3 carbonyl compounds were identified (from <3.8 to 712.9μg/m3). As a result, Personal exposure/indoor air concentration ratios of almost VOCs and carbonyl compounds were about 1, which means there are significant correlation between personal exposure and indoor concentration of many VOCs and carbonyl compounds.
