The Salt-water Experiment and PIV Measurement of Smoke Conveyance in Large Space Buildings

In this paper, the similarity criterions and the points for attention of the salt water modeling experiment of smoke flow are analyzed, and the smoke flow fields in large space buildings including: the smoke diffusion and the filling of smoke, the smoke diffusion with natural ventilation and the smoke diffusion with mechanical ventilation are studied with small-scale models of salt water modeling experiment. The results show that it is obvious difference of the smoke flow field and the diffusion process of smoke indoor with/without ventilation. Besides, the variation laws of the thickness of the smoke layer with time are proposed in this paper. PIV method is used to measure the smoke diffusion and the air flow field indoor with natural ventilation; the results reveal the instantaneous flow field of the salt water diffusion and the clear water movement induced by salt water perfectly. The application of this method can provide more technical properties directly and effectively, with which to determine the controlling methods of the smoke diffusion and the ways of evacuating the crowds.
